Federal partnership offers career development in health and social services
Fresno State’s Career Development Center has partnered with the Pathways to Public Service Program, an initiative overseen by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to launch careers in public service.
The Pathways to Public Service Program, established in 2019, aims to develop a pipeline of diverse, qualified and highly motivated students who will become the next generation of public servants, providing effective health and human services and fostering advances in medicine, public health and social services.
As members of the program, students can:
- Participate in virtual career fairs and professional development workshops.
- Learn about the federal hiring process.
- Serve as campus ambassadors for the program.
- Network with hiring officials within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
- Gain internships and entry-level positions.
Since its inception, the program has hired over 100 students for internships. Students who complete an internship and meet the requirements are then eligible for permanent employment within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ partnering agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health.
“Having the Pathways to Public Service Program as a partner is a wonderful opportunity for our students to start building their careers in public service,” said Mary Willis, executive director of the Career Development Center at Fresno State. “These types of partnerships prepare students to enter the workforce ready to make meaningful contributions and provide the public sector with a pipeline of talented, hardworking individuals.”
