The Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) Instructor provides front-line language training and support to clients within our Newcomer Program. This role is primarily responsible for facilitating and delivering impactful training sessions related to English as a Second Language (ESL) and life skills required for newcomers to Canada. Program sessions must be created following recognized guidelines and adapted based on the individual needs of newcomers. The role also includes developing and implementing appropriate action plans and programs and the responsibility to gather data and feedback needed to improve SCCC’s services and its capacity to deliver efficient and effective services.


• Deliver English language instruction to adult learners following Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) principles and Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) guidelines
• Design PBLA-based lesson plans following the CLB and LINC Curriculum guidelines
• Design assessment tasks for ongoing evaluation of learner progress based on the CLB/PBLA guidelines
• Provide computer-assisted instruction using a variety of software and websites to complement theme-based lessons
• Regularly review curriculum content to ensure information is current and appropriate to the client group
• Evaluate/adapt curriculum to ensure effectiveness, relevance, and quality to support clients learning ESL

• Prepare and submit monthly module plan and month-end report to the Manager of Newcomer Programs
• Prepare learner progress reports and conduct one-on-one interviews to provide feedback on progress
• Maintain attendance records and other documentation as required
• Keeps client management and case notes up-to-date
• Comply with SCCC’s vision, values, policies, and procedures
• Collaborate with various community partners in support of LINC programming

• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check (valid within 12 months)


• Current Ontario Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Certification is mandatory; a University degree is an asset
• Proficiency in English (CLB Level 8), both oral (speaking/listening) and written (reading/writing), is required; Proficiency in French and/or other multiple languages is considered an asset
• Experience teaching ESL to adult learners is considered an asset

• Experience working with vulnerable clients and marginalized individuals with complex needs is strongly desired
• Time and resource management skills; effectively and accurately manage client data, and document client progress
• Awareness of and respect for cultural diversity
• Effective interpersonal and intercultural communication techniques
• Experience working collaboratively as part of a diverse team
• Proficient in Microsoft 365 Workspace and Adobe Acrobat (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PDF, etc.); ability to learn other programs as needed

• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check
• Valid Class G driver’s license and clean driving record are required
• Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada

All new employees shall be fully vaccinated against COVID 19-prior to their start date and must also provide proof of vaccination. Fully vaccinated means that 14 days have elapsed after completion of a vaccine series (i.e., full two doses). Please note that the agreed-upon start date may be delayed to an alternate date on which a successful applicant becomes fully vaccinated. SCCC’s requirement that successful applicants be fully vaccinated is subject to any accommodation obligations it may have under the Human Rights Code.
