Step 1
Pick up a Linux distro that can be used as a Live CD, or a Linux distribution that can be run from a CD or usb drive. I recommend downloading Ubuntu, because mounted drives do not require Terminal.
Step 2
Burning the downloaded ISO file to a blank CD using Nero or any other burning software.
Step 3
Insert the CD into your system that crashes / damaged the hard disk and restarts the computer. In the BIOS, set and select Bo Boot Sequence and select CD / DVD Drive. Press the ‘U’ key to move the selection above the internal hard drive, then save and exit the BIOS.
The computer will restart and the Ubuntu logo will be displayed along with the menu of its choice. Select ‘Try Ubuntu ….’ This will start Ubuntu, running it from your CD drive. Do not worry, it will not affect your hard drive in any way.
Step 4
Once Ubuntu has been dloaded, look in the top left corner. Select Places. To the bottom of the menu, you will see an image of a hard drive like ‘0 .0 GB Drive’, displaying the internal capacity of your hard drive. Click to mount.

Install on an external hard drive or flash drive. Navigate to Places and select the drive you just connected to mount.

Internal hard drives and external media are now mounting. View the hard drive on the desktop. Click to open its contents. In the window that appears, you can select Documents and Settings and copy the data files to your external drive, or copy the entire internal drive to an external drive and sort it out later.
